United States v Windsor (2013)

United States v Windsor (2013), the Court declared (5–4) the Defense of Marriage Act (1996) unconstitutional because it denied federal benefits to married same-sex couples that were available to other married couples. But this decision opened the door for a much more wide- ranging and significant ruling two years later.
