Civic Nationalism

Liberal nationalism can also be described as civic nationalism. This idea of national identity does not see the nation as a bond of culture or shared history bit simply a matter of lagal status and civil rights. In this sense a citizen is defined not by knowing the rules of cricket or honoring a flag but by their legal status. However, the civic nationalist sees the legal right of citizenship as a contract which confers rights of participation and residency but also requires obligation and duties- such as the acceptance by all citizens of shared civic values of tolerance and democracy- Since the right of citizenship is legal and not a human right it can be removed. 2019 home Secretary Sajid Javid, stripped Shamema Begum of her British citizenship, barring her return to Britain.
