Republicans hold 218-214 House edge and 53-47 Senate majority entering November 3 vote
This year's contests include governor races in 39 states and legislative seats in nearly every state
More than $3.8 billion has been spent on aired political ads,
More than 100 million people likely will cast ballots in this year's midterm voting, if turnout is anything like the previous midterm in 2022; and as of October 12, a record $3.8 billion had been spent on political advertisements that have been aired so far. Top spending is in battleground US Senate races in Texas, Ohio and Michigan, according to AdImpact, which tracks the activities.
Elon Musk alone has spent about $366 million to support Republicans, according to campaign finance records.
President Donald Trump’s national popularity has fallen to record lows during his second term, driven primarily by public frustration over rising living costs, inflation, tariffs, and a deeply unpopular U.S.-backed war with Iran.
Texas Senate Race: Recent polling shows a highly competitive race between incumbent Republican Ken Paxton and Democratic challenger James Talarico.
Georgia Senate Race: Incumbent Democrat Jon Ossoff is defending his seat against Republican Representative Mike Collins.
Iowa Senate Race: Republican incumbent Ashley Hinson faces a strong challenge from Democrat Josh Turek in a race rated as a toss-up.
Other Critical Senate Seats: Key defensive and pickup opportunities for both parties are concentrated in Alaska, Maine, Michigan, and Ohio.
'It's the Economy stupid'
According to polling compiled by The Conversation on 19 October 2026, 34% of respondents identify the economy and inflation as the single most critical issue facing the country. Despite an active and unpopular conflict involving Iran that has driven up oil prices, only 6% of Americans view foreign policy as their top priority
The Crypto Influence: In Ohio, Reuters reported on 20 October 2026 that the cryptocurrency political action committee Defend American Jobs has poured more than $46 million into the state to back Republican Jon Husted against Democrat Sherrod Brown over Husted's pro-data center and pro-crypto stances.
Historically, midterms serve as a referendum on the sitting president, and 2026 is tracking closely with that pattern. The Guardian reported on 20 October 2026 that Donald Trump’s approval ratings have hit their lowest across both of his presidencies. Data from The Conversation on 19 October 2026 shows that 67% of respondents disapprove of the administration’s handling of inflation, indicating severe electoral headwinds for congressional Republicans looking to defend narrow majorities.
Elon Musk, who has given $369 million to Republicans since the start of 2025 and is the biggest individual donor to federal elections this cycle, gave $158 million last month to Senate Leadership Fund, which transferred matching amounts to Texas PAC, the group supporting Paxton. Musk gave an additional $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC in August to support the candidate. Shipping industry moguls Elizabeth and Richard Uihlein donated $138 million to support Repubicans in the current election cycle, while Jeff Yass, who founded Susquehanna International Group, and his wife, Janine, contributed $110 million. The top donor to a Democratic super PAC is George Soros, who is linked to the entities responsible for contributing $102 million to Democracy PAC, which he founded in 2019.
Two court decisions in 2010 helped establish today’s super PAC system. The Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling protected independent political spending by corporations and unions, McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission (2014), ruled 5–4 that aggregate limits on individual contributions to political candidates, party committees, and political action committees (PACs) within a two-year election cycle violate the First Amendment's Free Speech Clause.
Critics argue that the system gives wealthy donors disproportionate political influence and allows money to flow through nonprofits that conceal its original sources, using what’s referred to as “dark money.” Super PACs must disclose their donors, but those donors can include organizations that do not identify their own funders.
