The State and Globalisation

The concept of the nation state and the concept of globalisation are not only two of the key concepts in global politics, but they present a tension which is one of the main characteristics of debate in international relations in the 20th Century.

States are seen as sovereign – because they have absolute and ultimate authority over their citizens and subjects. Globalisation is the idea that the world is becoming a more interconnected and interdependent place, where events and ideas from one part of the world have an impact far beyond their borders. With interdependence comes a potential loss of a state's sovereignty.
