The Supreme Court’s opinion in Trump v. Vance held that neither Article II of the Constitution nor the Supremacy Clause in Article VI immunizes a sitting president from a criminal investigation by a state grand jury. The decision, released Thursday, was a victory for the rule of law. All nine justices agreed with the basic proposition that a sitting president can be criminally investigated and subpoenaed while still in office.
